The Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card allows visa free travel for 15 yeas but this can be extended by a further 10 years to make a total of 25 years. Unlike the OCI card however, PIO’s have to register with the police on each trip that is over 180 days.
In order to be successfully granted an PIO card for visa free travel to India, you will need to meet certain eligibility criteria which include:
- demonstrating that you are an person of India - by birth, residency or through parents or grandparents
- demonstrating that you do not hold any Indian nationality
- demonstrating that you are not of Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin
If you have held a passport of India before there is a requirement under Indian law to surrender this when you have obtained foreign nationality. If have surrendered it to a British diplomatic post then you will need to often provide evidence of this.
